Nigeria promotes GIS-based afforestation programmes

The Nigerian Federal government will continue to work with the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and other relevant stakeholders, to ensure the sustainable management of forests in the nation, through the application of state-of-the-art GIS. The government has pledged to provide substantial funds for the national afforestation programmes in Nigeria. Experts in the country have pointed out the need to build technical capacity of the staff at the federal and states levels so that the staff can professionally manage and monitor the forests with the aid of satellite technology.
