Managers of the Office du Niger irrigation scheme in Mali are using remote sensing data to analyse the efficiency of the system without having to physically check the condition of the infrastructure. The information will help them modernise the system and prepare for future expansion. The low-cost methodology clearly shows areas receiving too much or too little water, indicating possible faults in the system. Researchers are now using web 2.0 tools to make this information more readily available.
